Smart Store Powered by S/4HANA Public Cloud for Retail

retailsolutions contributes to SAP and Aramark’s S.Mart Store project

St. Ingbert, April 2025 – SAP and catering company Aramark have launched an autonomous convenience store on the SAP campus in Frankfurt am Main. Open 24/7 and fully staffless, the S.Mart Store operates independently using SAP technologies combined with partner solutions and artificial intelligence. The technological backbone of the store is SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud for Retail. Among the key project contributors was retailsolutions AG, one of Europe’s leading SAP retail consulting firms.

“As a Public Cloud for Retail partner, SAP approached us in autumn 2024 with the opportunity to participate in this innovative project. Over the past few months, our small team has been responsible for managing Public Cloud processes and migrating the master data,” says Anne Kessler, Cloud Architect at retailsolutions.

No Smart Store Without Reliable Master Data

From May onwards, SAP employees will be able to purchase drinks, snacks, sandwiches, and more from the compact store, which stocks around 300 items. While the assortment may be limited, consistent and accurate master data remains critical for seamless operations. “A Public Cloud system cannot function without reliable master data. That’s why our primary focus was on migrating product and merchandise group data,” Kessler explains. “Peripheral systems in the store are fed with data from S/4. For example, the SAP Omnichannel Promotion Pricing Service (OPPS) allows all promotional pricing to be deactivated instantly, reverting electronic shelf labels to original pricing. The Public Cloud for Retail also manages stock ordering and supplier coordination.”

Customers can choose from three payment methods: a Scan & Go feature in a mobile app, a traditional self-service checkout, or a contactless system using RFID technology, which automatically detects items. RFID and camera systems also support inventory management and help identify misplaced products.

A Forward-Looking Concept

The idea of an autonomous Smart Store—also known as an Experience Store—is not entirely new. SAP even operates a dedicated SAP Experience Center that develops these types of stores globally. “Until now, the concept existed primarily in theory. With the launch of the S.Mart Store, we now have a functioning, real-world store with tangible products and actual sales,” Kessler adds. “The Public Cloud solution, available since February, represents a significant step forward in retail innovation. It provides a foundation for adapting Smart Stores to various customer needs, locations, and usage scenarios.”
